Self-care shouldn’t a stressor for you. Unfortunately, just like everything else that we face, now self-care has turned into this elaborate event that not all moms have the ability to do. Ahem, highlight reel syndrome.
Not mom has the ability to leave her kids for a day, weekend or a whole vacation. Let’s be realistic ladies. I know even with the family that I have in town, that still wouldn’t be a practical thing for me to do.
So I’ve become the queen of simple self-care, and I’ll tell you what, I’m much happier with it! The simple things matter just as much as the big things.
Listen, this is what I did today in my 20 mins of alone time:
I sat in my doorway in the sunshine, because it was too cold outside but the sun was hitting just right n the doorway, and yes I plopped my butt right down on the floor.
I grabbed my leftovers from yesterday (no food goes to waste with me lol) – threw on some music and just vibed. I ate in peace, I enjoyed the sunshine and I danced (one of my all time favorite things to do).
Did this cost me anything? – absolutely not.
Did I feel entirely better after this self-care session? You’re damn right!
Did this lead into a mini dance it out session after I finished my lunch? – oooooooh yeah!
You don’t have to go big to reap the benefits of self-care. The fact of the matter is doing something that is going to make you happy and keep your cup full.

- Go for a walk
- Take a bath
- Do a facemask
- Move your body
- Hydrate yourself
- Go get a coffee/tea
- Get a manicure/pedicure
- Read a book
- Listen to music
- Buy yourself flowers
- Speak positively about yourself
- Take a nap
- Eat a meal by yourself
My biggest piece of advice for you is to schedule your self-care time. This is a form of accountability for you and for your family. If it is on a schedule, it must be done. Talk with your partner/spouse about the importance of you taking time for yourself.
This is where you reiterate, self-care is not selfish, it is a necessity. In order for you to take care of everyone, you have to take care of yourself.
Keep it simple in the beginning. For you and for your family. You’ll get less push back from them if you start simple. But mama, you have to make it a mandate to take care of yourself. Mom burnout is a real thing! Once you reach burn out, it takes a long time to come back from it. Our bodies and our children feel the effects of the burnout.
Get ahead of it. Take the time for yourself. Nourish you body and your mind.
